CDD Age Bands Visualization

CDD Age Bands Visualization - User Documentation

šŸ“Œ What is it?

CDD Age Bands is an analytical visualization tool that displays the Coin Days Destroyed (CDD) of moving Bitcoin categorized by age groups (or "bands") on the blockchain. This chart reveals when and from which age bands long-dormant coins start to move.

🧠 What is CDD (Coin Days Destroyed)?

Coin Days Destroyed is a metric that measures how long a coin has been dormant and how much "time value" is destroyed when it moves.

Example:

  • 1 BTC not moved for 100 days → 100 CDD

  • 0.5 BTC not moved for 200 days → 100 CDD

The total CDD gives insight into the overall "movement intensity" on the blockchain.

šŸŽØ How Does the Chart Work?

This visualization:

  • Displays the BTC price as a line for each time interval.

  • Simultaneously plots the CDD contributions from specific age bands as curves with filled colored areas below them.

This allows users to see which age groups are contributing to market movements.

Age Bands:

The chart includes the following age bands:

  • 0d – 1d

  • 1d – 1w

  • 1w – 1m

  • 1m – 3m

  • 3m – 6m

  • 6m – 12m

  • 12m – 18m

  • 18m – 2y

  • 2y – 3y

  • 3y – 5y

  • 5y – 7y

  • 7y – 10y

  • 10y+

šŸ”Ž How to Interpret It?

  • Movements of younger coins (0d–1m) → May indicate new users or exchange-related transfers.

  • Movements of older coins (2y+) → Could signal selling by long-term holders.

  • Wide colored areas → High total CDD in that age group → Indicates a significant movement to watch.

  • No movement in an age band → That segment is in HODL mode.

šŸ› ļø User Warnings

  • This chart shows the age of spent coins, not the full age structure of the blockchain.

  • Only moved coins are considered (this is not a UTXO Age Bands chart).

  • CDD values may fluctuate significantly, so they are normalized for visualization purposes.

🧭 What Is It Useful For?

  • Market bottom/top signals: Sudden movement of older coins can be a major structural signal.

  • Behavioral analysis: Reveals whether long-term or short-term holders are driving the market.

  • Liquidity shifts: Helps detect which age bands are becoming dominant.
